Some decisions

Five steps

  1. Take a seat, or choose bet behind if the table is full.

  3. Cards are dealt face up.
  4. Choose hit, stand, double or split before the timer ends.
  5. The dealer plays out the hand.

What it pays

OptionWhat it means
A seatYou play your own hand
Bet behindYou bet on another player's hand
Unlimited tablesEveryone plays the same hand

A sample round

You are dealt eleven against the dealer's six. You double: one more card, a nine, for twenty. The dealer busts and your doubled bet wins.

Playing against the clock

The one real difference from software blackjack is the timer. You have ten to fifteen seconds for each decision, and if it runs out the game stands for you, which can turn a good hand into a bad one. Until the basic rules are automatic, practise on a software table where nothing is timed. Most live tables also deal from eight decks and reshuffle about halfway through the shoe; neither changes how you should play.

A good first bet

Stand on 17 or more and never take insurance.

The mistake to avoid

Running out of time on a decision: the game stands for you.

What it costs

About 50p per £100 with basic strategy; check the table pays 3 to 2.

Before you play: set a deposit limit, decide a budget, try the demo, follow the six steps.
