A sample round
You put £1 on red. The ball lands on 14, which is red, and you are paid £1 and keep your stake. You bet red again; it lands on zero, which is green, and you lose. Over many spins red wins a little under half the time, and that small shortfall is the house edge.
A good first bet
Start with even-money outside bets such as red or black: they win nearly half the time and pay 1 to 1.
The mistake to avoid
Playing an American wheel with two zeros, which nearly doubles the house edge to 5.26%, or trusting a betting system.
What it costs
Every bet on a single-zero wheel costs 2.70% of the stake on average. £100 of bets costs about £2.70.
